In-Row cooling is a type of air-conditioning system used for Data Centers, where the cooling units are placed in-between server racks in a row. It provides highly focused and targeted cooling to the server racks in a Data Center. In-Row cooling is utilized alongside a hot aisle/cold aisle layout.

Hot and cold aisle layouts involve lining the server racks in alternating rows, with hot exhausts facing one way and cold air exhausts facing another way. The hot aisles face return ducts, while cold aisles face air conditioning output.

An In-row cooling unit draws warm exhaust air directly from the hot aisle, cools it, and distributes it to the cold aisle. This ensures that inlet temperatures are steady for precise operation.

Coupling the air conditioning with the heat source produces an efficient direct return air path; this is called ‘close-coupled cooling’.
