Maximising data center efficiency with ColdLogik Rear Door Heat Exchangers

The demand for efficient, reliable, and scalable cooling solutions in data centers has never been higher. We’re proud to say that our ColdLogik Rear Door Heat Exchangers (RDHx) are at the forefront of meeting this critical need.

In today’s blog, we’ll explore the stand-out features of our ColdLogik products, showcasing why we believe they are the superior choice for data center cooling.

First things first, how does the ColdLogik solution work?

ColdLogik RDHx uses a method known as Air Assisted Liquid Cooling (AALC). This innovative approach combines the strengths of air and liquid cooling, allowing for higher densities in standard data center design and significantly boosting efficiency in both new and retrofitted projects.

Here’s how it works: ambient air is drawn into the rack by the IT equipment fans. As the hot air exits the equipment, it is pulled over the heat exchanger by EC fans mounted in the RDHx chassis. The heat is transferred to the cooling fluid within the heat exchanger, and the now-chilled air is expelled into the room at or just below the desired ambient temperature.

ColdLogik’s adaptive intelligence, which is integrated into every active RDHx, manages both of these processes. The system uses air-assisted liquid cooling to automatically maintain the room temperature at its most efficient level, ensuring optimal performance and energy savings.

Why is ColdLogik such an efficient system?

ColdLogik RDHx can boost efficiency in most data centers without the need for any changes to their current design. However, the full potential is truly unlocked when the entire ColdLogik solution is deployed.

By removing the heat at the source and eliminating the need for air mixing or containment, ColdLogik provides a noticeable increase to the supply water temperature. With this, more efficient options for external heat rejection are available. In some cases, ColdLogik RDHx has removed the need for any compressor-based cooling, enabling year-round free cooling.

What makes ColdLogik RDHx so resilient?

  • Up to N+4 on fans
  • A and B power feeds automatic transfer switch (ATS) as standard
  • Specifically designed printed circuit board’s (PCB) for enhanced functionality in the event of failure
  • Hot swappable fans
  • Universal fans reducing the need for localised resiliency stock
  • Leak prevention system available for deployment if required

So, what are the key benefits of a data center cooling solution like this?

It saves energy and reduces carbon

With an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of over 100 at maximum capacity. The system can achieve a potential Cooling PUE of 1.035 with rear door cooling and it requires only 3.5% power to cool 100% of the heat load - a stark contrast to the 38% required by traditional methods. By isolating Global Warming Potential (GWP) gases to a centralised area and reducing their volume, ColdLogik dramatically cuts carbon emissions, saving the equivalent of over 50,000 trees per 1 Megwatt (1MW) deployment.

It increases the real estate in your data center

ColdLogik frees up valuable space in your data center. Since there is no need for supplementary cooling, no white space is taken up for coolant distribution, allowing you to maximise your data center’s real estate for other critical infrastructure.

There is zero water use

Higher water temperatures reduce the need for mechanical cooling while maintaining ASHRAE A1 temperatures, which minimises the impact on the environment and reduces operational costs associated with water use.

Operational savings

By removing hot spots, ColdLogik increases the lifespan of hardware and operates above the dew point, which eliminates the need for condensation management, whilst maintaining optimal humidity levels. The system ensures rapid ROI and lower total cost of ownership with a significantly reduced number of service tickets. Additionally, it increases computing capacity and saves capital expenditure on building costs.

Simple Design

A straightforward and user-friendly design with plug-and-play installation and versatile deployment options. No supplementary cooling or specialist hardware is required and the system’s adaptive intelligence will control the entire room temperature and facilitate fast-tracked data center planning and deployment strategies.

It’s a modular solution that can be retrofitted

Challenges and Solutions

Challenges

Bulk faced the following challenges:

  • How to design a solution for a colocation customer when specific IT technology, density or rack configuration is not known.
  • How to cater for the current GPU trend requiring 40-50kW+ per rack, while also considering future tech upgrades that could scale to even higher densities including Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC).
  • Find a flexible solution that allows its customer the option to select and bring in their own racks of different sizes and manufacturers.
  • Maximise operational efficiency through optimised airflow and heat rejection.
  • Reduce time for white space fit out and customer deployment by pre-installing and testing all cooling components.

Solutions

The ColdLogik solution:

  • Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of over 100 at maximum capacity.
  • Average 15% reclaimed power for Compute by comparison to traditional cooling.
  • Potential Cooling PUE available of 1.035 with RDC.
  • Over 50,000 trees worth of carbon saved per 1MW ColdLogik deployment.
  • Adaptive Intelligence that controls the whole room temperature.
  • Higher water temperatures reduce the need for mechanical cooling, whilst maintaining ASHRAE A1 temperatures.
